About this tool
This calculator shows results in today’s dollars by adjusting for inflation, so the numbers are easy to relate to your current lifestyle.
The 4% rule
A common guideline says you can withdraw about 4% of your savings in the first year of retirement (then adjust for inflation) with a high chance your money lasts 30 years. So $1 million supports roughly $40,000 a year.
Boost your retirement savings
- Take any employer 401(k) match — it’s free money.
- Use tax-advantaged accounts: 401(k), IRA/Roth IRA (US), ISA/SIPP (UK), RRSP/TFSA (Canada), superannuation (Australia).
- Increase contributions by 1% each year.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I need to retire?
A common estimate is 25 times your yearly spending (based on the 4% rule).
What return should I assume?
Many planners use 5–7% for a diversified portfolio before inflation. Lower numbers are more conservative.
Does this include Social Security or pensions?
No. Subtract expected pension or Social Security income from your monthly goal for a more accurate picture.
